🍼 How to Prepare for Your In-Home Newborn Photography Session

By SarahRachael Photography | Serving Frederick, MD and Beyond

Welcoming a newborn into your home is magical — and incredibly busy. That’s why I bring the photography session to you, capturing authentic, heartwarming images in the comfort of your home. If you’re booked (or thinking about it!), here’s everything you need to feel confident and prepared for your in-home newborn photography session.

1. Choose the Right Time

The sweet spot for newborn photos is when your baby is between 5–14 days old. At this stage, babies are still sleepy and naturally curl into those adorable poses we love. However, I also specialize in older newborn babies to get those adorable baby eyes , usually around 2 months old

💡 Pro Tip: Sessions are typically scheduled in the late morning (around 9:30–11:00 AM) for the best natural light.

I use soft, natural light during your session, so we’ll work in the rooms with the best window light — usually the nursery, living room, or your bedroom.

Quick tips to prep your space:

  • Open all curtains and blinds

  • Clear nightstands or distracting background items

  • Keep décor simple and neutral where possible

  • Make the bed in the master bedroom with a soft, solid-colored blanket

Don’t worry — your home doesn’t need to be spotless. Lived-in and loved is what we’re going for.

3. Keep Baby Comfortable

Before I arrive, feed your baby to help them feel full, sleepy, and relaxed. Keep your home a bit warmer than usual — around 75°F — especially if you’d like photos of baby swaddled or in a diaper.

🧺 Have these handy:

  • Soft, neutral swaddles and onesies

  • Extra diapers and wipes

  • A pacifier (if baby uses one)

  • Favorite heirloom or handmade blankets

  • Burp cloths and bottles (if bottle feeding)

4. What to Wear

Soft, neutral, and timeless wins every time. I recommend coordinating (not matching) outfits in calming tones like creams, soft grays, light pastels, and earthy neutrals. Think comfortable but elevated.

Avoid:

  • Logos and graphics

  • Neon colors

  • Busy patterns

This keeps the focus on connection — and your beautiful new baby.
I also provide gowns for mom when requested.

5. What the Session Will Feel Like

In-home newborn sessions are relaxed, gentle, and centered around your family’s rhythm. Sessions typically last 1.5 to 2 hours, leaving time for snuggles, feedings, diaper changes, and breaks.

I’ll guide you through natural poses and gently style baby as they rest, but the magic happens in those in-between moments — the ones that tell your story.

6. This Is Your Story

Every family is different. Some clients love a minimalist, light-filled look, while others want warmth, color, or meaningful textures from their home woven into the shoot. I’m here to help reflect your style and preserve this chapter in your life with honesty and beauty.
